There are so many songs about love and about half of that lot are about love lost. The great majority are soppy or mediocre. I suggest the best that has ever been recorded on the subject is Mistreated by Deep Purple - (1974). Sadly never a big hit, maybe because they did not release it as a single and so it probably didn’t get much radio play. the original version on the album Burn is more straightforward than this one. It is great because it is not a ballad, the words are a precise description and Ritchie Blackmore’s guitar playing is stunning in just a few minutes capturing a whole set of emotions like angry, bewilderment, sadness, manic, resignation, etc whilst smoothly transitioning between each distinct emotion. Of course supported by the organ and drums. The burning question is whether the words were written to match the music (more likely) or vice versa. I don’t think Ritchie would have written the words (maybe the intention, I wish I knew. As for this particular performance, I suppose it needs to be watched in the context of the whole story of that particular concert and how Ritchie was unhappy about the timing of the event, contrary to their agreement and how he burned the stage at the finish.

Music does not produce a band like this anymore

Hello, Rebeka. Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé are no longer with us. They were both great. And this song was composed and made for them. I don't think there has been another duo that covered this song. Every phrase, every part of the melody, their voices, everything was done just for them. A work of art. An unmatched creation. You've said here as well as on other reaction videos of Dire Straights about being focussed on instruments rather than vocals. You're absolutely correct about that, but without vocals their unique sound wouldn't be there - kinda like if you removed violins from an orchesta. A voice is also an instrument and in Dire Straights, Mark Knopfer's voice is an essential instrument because of it's sound and how he plays it

Love your reactions and I realize I'm commenting on a year old post. His Miami arrest was literally the month before, that was stressing him out, so he was emotionally checked out, so you tack that on top of the fact that he hated the song and that's what we get. If you want some great live performances to listen to, I recommend Detroit and Boston, both are incredible, Philadelphia is really good with some rare gems on there too. None have video footage that I'm aware of. Detroit got them banned from Detroit because mid performance Jim decided they were going to play for an extra hour past what Detroit allowed at the time, plus the whole band was on top of their game.
